How digital photography works
In a digital camera there is no film, a sensor replaces the film. The same image sensor can take millions of photos without needing replacement, unlike film.
There are two types of image sensors:
- CCS or Charged-Coupled Device that turns luminosity into electricity.
- CMOS sensor, APS or Active Pixel Sensor which are an array of individual pixel sensors each one with a photo-detector and am amplifier.
You could compare a digital camera to a mini-computer. As it happens with computers, the camera analyzes the data you enter – intensity of light – and will use memory devices to store the image information. Most cameras use flash memory, built in, removable, or both types.
