Fixed lens - this is the kind of lens the less expensive, very simple models have. Probably this is the lens in your camera phone. To take a close picture you need to move yourself closer to your subject.

zoom lens - many compact cameras have these now. The question is what kind of zoom yo’ve got, optical or digital. You will be able to use your zoom lens to draw your subject closer to you, without the need to move. This is very useful when your subject is in a difficult position or is skittish, if you are shooting animals, for instance. You will waste a little time between shoots because the lens must focus again when you zoom in an out.
