Point and Shoot Cameras
A point and shoot camera is the most straightforward of all digital cameras to use. As the name implies, it is a camera that you simply point at the subject and shoot – that is, click the shutter to capture the image. Taking pictures is really easy. No need to worry about controls
This type of camera offers ease of use and the convenience of small size and portability. Point and shoot cameras are very automatic – auto flash, auto exposure, and auto shut off – and often configured with different settings aimed to assist an amateur user. These may include light settings, depth of field for various types of pictures and even reduction of red eye. Point and shoot cameras may perhaps offer other features in addition, such as being waterproof or shock-proof, face detection, image stabilization, video capability and a long list of other resources which are making these cameras more convenient to use every day in a variety of situations.
Point and shoot cameras are usually, though not always, of the right size to fit in a pocket. The lenses must be small. That is one of the reasons why a point and shoot camera makes use of lenses which are free of focusing and built-in flash units and they do not have interchangeable lenses.
The number of megapixels may be low in point and shoot cameras, certainly never as large as in SLR cameras. Low megapixels together with the single lens mean quality is not as good as with SLRs either. The pictures may not be of a quality good enough to print if we are talking about anything lower than 3 megapixels… but if all what you want to do is view the pictures on a computer screen, share them in social media sites, or email them to friends, this could be all you need.
These cameras are used, in many cases, to take a single kind of photo, but a point and shoot camera is also an easy way to take digital notes throughout the day. If you see something interesting, take a snapshot. You have documented the event or object and can now catalog it for later use.
Even if this type of camera does not offer all the bells and whistles a dSLR may do, they are still very powerful. They are small, portable, and much, much cheaper than the more sophisticated digital cameras.
