The viewfinder
The viewfinder is the device that enables you to see the area the lens will photograph. It will look like a small window, usually on top of the camera, but the viewfinder carries out a slightly more complex task. There are two main types of viewfinders.
Optical viewfinder
Looking through an optical viewfinder to see your subject is very much like looking through a miniature telescope. This type is the one with the most simple design.
Electronic viewfinder
This one is really a tiny LCD screen – a reduced size version – found at the back of the camera, however, it lets you see exactly what the lens is seeing and it will show the true colour for the image – this feature is particularly useful when you are shooting a subject or landscape with poor light or monotone colour.
What the lens sees
It will depend on the type of lens your camera comes. Cheap cameras only bring a fixed lens but zoom lenses are more and more common.
Conclusion
Although all cameras come with LCD screen, not all will have a viewfinder. Given a chance, it is probably best to get a camera with both, a LCD screen and viewfinder.
